My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our four nights at the Ayatana Hamlet & Spa Hotel in Chiang Mai recently (Mar 15-19). We have vowed to return there on our next visit to Chiang Mai, hopefully in 2009. The quiet serenity of this hotel at the time we stayed was bliss and it was such a delight to hear the chirping of the birds outside our bathroom window every morning. The staff were warm, friendly, efficient and whisperingly quiet. After eating down at the Night Bazaar on our first night in Chiang Mai, we soon favoured the hotel s dining room for dinner each night as the food was so good and so reasonably priced. After wandering around the local markets during the heat of the day, it was a welcomed relief to be able to dine in the cooling comfort at the hotel each night and still be able to sample local dishes. The hotel s home-made pandanas coconut ice-cream was to die for and althought we don t indulge in ice-cream very much when at home, we certainly did at the Ayatana almost every night, it was so good. The hotel s free internet service for patrons was an added bonus and what a lovely spot it was to work on the computer!

Nobody knows this hotel included local taxi -- took -- took drivers. But when they begin to understand where is the hotel you can hear "ooh, it's so far". But it is not really too far, only about 15-20 minutes by took-took or near 1 h on foot. I check it some times. I think we can estimate the hotel with 3*** + to relay on quality-price ratio. Of course the hotel is original, it looks unordinary and cozy. As a boutique. But small hotel besides cozy has some limitations. For example Internet-access is unreliable and slow, breakfast is a bit poor and there are not any facilities for leisure time. Neither a gymnastic hall nor café. It is only a small swimming pool with beach beds. And to my mind such hotel in Chiang Mai should not cost 3 600 bat per night. It's a bit expensive. To hotel's credit be the staff is polite and careful, their English is quite enough. For me :) It is clean always and everywhere. Furniture, equipment, bedclothes are OK. And you can hear bird's song as well as loud cock's crowing. Every five minutes, whole night. You often hear noisy dog's bark too. Sum up. In my opinion it is a good place to stay for 2-3 days if you want just to lie near pool. Whole day and without any neighbours :)

My wife and I spent 4 days at the Ayatana Hamlet and everything met our expectations. Our double room, overlooking the pool, was spacious and clean, the bathroom was pretty big with anything you may need, i.e. kimonos, hair drier, moisturizer etc. The only problems we had were caused by the slightly unconfortable hard mattress/pillow (we had this problem in all the hotels we were in Thailand) and by the noise coming from the dogs barking all night long in the roads near the hotel. The restaurant is very good, we had dinner there twice and both Thai and Western dishes were tasty, fresh and well presented. All the members of the staff are very kind and polite, they helped us a lot especially the girls at the reception (TangMo and April if I recall their names correctly!). We would definitively go back.

Excellent ambience. The hotel was a real treasure, small but all the amenities were available & the staff were very attentive. A little far from the night bazaar etc, but not a problem since they provided free transport. Spa charges are a little on the higher side, but all in all ,Definitely a find.

The nicest place I have ever stayed. I am not saying the rooms were super luxury or anything like that. But the whole experience was wonderful. The rooms were well laid out, clean, good size, the location of the Spa itself was perfect and the staff was A++ We paid in the area of 5,000 baht per night and I think it was a bargain at that price. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Would not stay again. problems: - Deluxe room which cost Bht 1300 more, had only balcony space of about 5 sqm vs promised of 16 sqm compared to standard room - reception was not manned 24 hrs and no one responded to emergency in early morning when my expectant friend had to call for an ambulance - spa was not opened yet, and no one informed us about it - wld not have booked this place if I knew abt it On the plus side, service was very polite (though slow in the restaurant)
